#ThingsNutritionistsLike – Book for Kids on Hunger
Our Favourite Things – GREAT Kids Book: Is this Stomach, Mouth or Heart Hunger?
Written by Wendy Shah, Illustrated by Patrick Sully

It is not enough to simply understand what, when and how much to eat. Self-awareness about the different types of hunger and why we eat the way we do is one of the most important skills for yourself, but also for parents and childcare providers to teach. In our Calgary nutritionist practice, all the dietitians on our team are trained to facilitate the Craving ChangeTM program which is a cognitive-behavioral intervention for problematic eating. One of my favorite concepts in the Craving ChangeTM program is helping our clients to identify the type of hunger they are experiencing and that different types of hunger have different types of need:
- Stomach hunger (physical or medical necessity to eat)
- Mouth hunger (craving related to the senses)
- Heart hunger (emotional trigger or learned behavior)
I was thrilled to see this Craving ChangeTM concept come alive in a book for kids age 4 – 10. This is a must have book for parents, schools and caregivers teach some of the most important skills in developing a positive relationship with food.
