Our favourite things – cooking competitions
As my children get older, I want them to continue to grow and learn new skills. Especially in the kitchen!
One thing we have done as a family since my now-teens were smaller was to watch cooking competition shows on tv together. This has inspired some fun cooking and baking competitions among our family. It has also inspired my children to try new flavours and ideas they may not have otherwise.
We’ve had times in the kitchen where one of the kids has picked ingredients that we need to incorporate into our dishes. We’ve taken inspiration from a dish we saw made in a new way. We’ve attempted to recreate various items that celebrity chefs have created, as well as used some of their catch phrases (“it’s RAW!” – Gordon Ramsay) We’ve also played up and copied some failures that we’ve seen on shows (for example, my husband’s recent birthday cupcakes, inspired by the Neflix show “Nailed It” – they were delicious, but intentionally very, very unattractive!) The fact that we don’t have a large, multi-station kitchen like most tv shows do has just added to the fun.
For our family, this has been one way we have had our children get more involved with wanting to spend time trying new things in the kitchen. Both from watching cooking competitions, and creating our own! It’s a great foundation of building memories and building meals, all at once.
