Our Favourite Things: Food Huggers
One of my favourite things is related to two of my least favourite things – food waste and a cluttered fridge and counterspace. In an ideal world, my kitchen would be free from clutter (I can dream, can’t I?) and we would eat every scrap of food we purchase but that’s not going to happen, is it? So instead of dreaming of this “ideal” world, I have found a solution that brings me a tad bit closer to this world of a super tidy kitchen and zero food waste. What’s this solution, you ask? Food Huggers!
Food Huggers are reusable, silicone covers that “hug” snuggly around unused portions of cut fruit and veggies. This tight seal on the cut side of produce stops fruits and veggies from going bad quickly. I’ve even noticed my cut avocados don’t brown as fast. Pretty cool, right?
What I love about the Food Huggers is that not only are my half used/cut fruits and veggies lasting longer (hooray for less waste!), they keep my kitchen a lot tidier. Before I had these Food Huggers, my cut fruits and veggies would:
1) Be placed cut side down on small plates, either in my fridge or on my countertop. This method took up lots of space.
2) Covered in plastic wrap. This method preserves produce a bit but creates more waste (the plastic wrap).
Or
3) Simply, put back into the veggie crisper. This method always resulted in me needing to cut a portion of the air exposed veggie off before using again. Again, this method just created more waste.
For me, these silicone Food Huggers have made a big difference in my kitchen. I’m throwing out less produce, using less plastic wrap and my food space is looking nicer.
