Our Favourite Things – Frozen Black Beans
Let’s face it
– not everyone in my family enjoys beans as much as I do. So my new favourite thing is having black beans handy in the freezer. Even if it’s not a part of a recipe or I want an addition to my salad or tacos, I can pull out a cup full, heat and throw in my dish.

For my clients, I have seen many meat eating families where one family member becomes vegetarian. Having quick and easy sources of protein such as frozen beans on hand makes it simple to create one supper meal that works for everyone (i.e. Vegetable stirfry with separate chicken and beans).
Note: Legumes such as beans are not just for vegetarians! Legumes are high in soluble fibre which can help lower blood cholesterol and they have a low glycemic index which may help manage blood sugar levels. Also, legumes provide a source of other vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc and folate.
If you open a can of beans you can definitely freeze the leftovers in a freezer safe bag/container. However, recently I also found bagged black beans in the freezer aisle at Superstore. They are great!
