What is your background as a Dietitian?
Quite honestly, I stumbled into the profession. I didn’t even know what a Dietitian was during my entire time in high school. When I graduated, I thought I’d take a gap year and “figure out what I wanted to do with my life”. By the end of the year, I still had no idea. What I did know was that I always enjoyed food – the cooking, the eating, the connection to community through it, and I always loved helping people. During my gap year I began taking more interest in the science of food just out of personal curiosity. When I returned home, I thought “maybe I can study this” and with a quick google search I found the Dietetics Program at the University of Alberta. It turned out to be the perfect fit!
I completed my nutrition degree and dietetic practicum in the spring of 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Finding a job as a young grad at that time proved to be a bit of a
challenge.

My first job out of graduation wasn’t actually a dietitian position but was working in a School Nutrition program focused on increasing food security in low-income areas of Edmonton by preparing and serving lunches to elementary school kids. I loved this opportunity to work with amazing staff and to see first-hand the impact that a simple, nutritious meal has on the energy, focus, and joy of those sweet children.
In early 2021, I started a dietitian position with the CHANGE Health Alberta research study out of the University of Alberta. For the past year and a half, I worked virtually one-on-one with clients with Metabolic Syndrome. I highly valued this opportunity to really get to know my clients, cheer them on, and to see them create lasting change in their lives.
What is your favorite part about being a Dietitian and Nutrition Coach?
I love the relational side. Just being able to sit down and connect with people where they’re at and work together towards their goals.

What is one myth you want to clear up about Dietitians?
Dietitians are not the Food Police! Quite often when I say I am a Dietitian I’ll get a response like “oh, well I won’t eat the donut in front of you then” or “don’t look in my shopping cart”. I eat donuts too! I believe all foods fit into a healthy, balanced life, and if you enjoy a certain food, like donuts, there is no reason you cannot enjoy that in your life (unless of course, you’re allergic). Dietitians are not here to judge your food choices or tell you to restrict your favourite foods. Part of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is enjoying nutrient rich foods that nourish our body but also foods that bring us joy and nourish our soul.

What is your favorite nerdy nutritious food chosen for health?
I’d say probably spinach. I laugh at my childhood memories of Popeye the sailor and how unappetizing they made spinach seem. But now, I really love adding fresh spinach to my omelettes, smoothies, or raw in a salad with some feta and fresh berries. It’s packed full of great vitamins, minerals, and fibre!
What is your favorite soulful food chosen for taste, enjoyment, and social fun?
This is probably the hardest question of them all. It really depends on my mood, where I am, what season it is, etc. That being said, I’m a firm bread-lover. Very few things can beat a slice of warm, fresh bread with butter and honey, in my opinion. I also absolutely love cheesecake, especially a classic New York cheesecake, maybe with a little raspberry sauce on top. Absolutely divine.
Something that people may not know about me:
I’m quickly becoming a bit of a plant-mom. I don’t have any children or pets yet, and my plants have definitely taken that space right now. My husband and I just recently moved into a slightly larger townhouse, and we went from 8 to 24 house plants in a couple of months. I also have started gardening over the last few years and absolutely love the whole process of growing yummy vegetables from seed to on your plate.
I also LOVE the outdoors and in 2020 I decided to combine my passion for the outdoors and food and started an outdoor food blog, called Camp Kitchen, where I share easy, approachable recipes for camping and the outdoors.
