Our Favourite Things: Kefir
One of my favorite things is Kefir.
(I recently realized it’s pronounced Keh-fear.)
Kefir is a tart cultured milk drink made by adding kefir grains to milk which causes fermentation to take place. Its nutritional content is similar to greek yogurt (rich in protein and calcium) but the probiotic content is much higher. (Probiotics are live microorganisms that are beneficial for your health, especially digestive health.) Liberte brand Kefir has more than 2 billion probiotic bacteria per 1 cup serving.
Another benefit of Kefir is it can give people with lactose intolerance another option to meet their calcium needs. The bacteria in the drink actually help digest the lactose and makes it more tolerable.
Our family buys plain Kefir since fruit flavoured versions can contain a lot of added sugar. We enjoy it best by adding it to fruit smoothies. Also, this way the whole family (including my boys) can benefit from the probiotics without taking a supplement.
