Wondering what it’s like to work with a Dietitian?

In this short video, Andrea Holwegner, Founder of Health Stand Nutrition, explains how our personalized nutrition counselling works and how our compassionate team can help you eat well and still have a life.

What is Nutrition Counselling with a Registered Dietitian?

Nutrition counselling with our Registered Dietitian team is personalized, one-on-one, science-based support designed to help you live both HealthFULLY + SoulFULLY.

When you work directly with one of our Registered Dietitians, you receive clear, practical guidance grounded in evidence — not trends, fad diets, or unnecessary restrictions. Through personalized nutrition counselling, we tailor recommendations to your health history, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are regulated health professionals in Canada, held to strict standards of education, ethics, and ongoing training. That means the nutrition advice you receive is credible, current, and customized specifically to you.

Our approach blends our right and left brain — helping you build balanced meals with enough nerdy nutritious foods for health, while also making room for flexibility, enjoyment, and the social joy of eating.

Whether you are working with a Registered Dietitian for medical nutrition therapy or general healthy eating support, our goal is to provide clear, sustainable guidance you can apply for life.

How Nutrition Counselling Works

Working with a Registered Dietitian is a structured, collaborative process designed to create real, sustainable change — not quick fixes.

Step 1: Free Discovery Call

We begin with a simple conversation to understand what you’re looking for support with.

We’ll explain how our programs work, review pricing and insurance details, and match you with the best-fit Registered Dietitian on our team.

Step 2: Getting to Know You

Your first one-on-one session includes a detailed review of your health history, medical background, lifestyle patterns, eating habits, and goals.

As regulated health professionals in Canada, Registered Dietitians are trained to assess both the science and the real-life factors influencing your nutrition.

Step 3: Personalized Plan & Ongoing Support

Together, you build a customized nutrition strategy grounded in evidence and sustainability. Follow-up sessions provide accountability, skill-building, and practical adjustments as your life, health, and goals evolve.

Our approach blends our core values of clarity, compassion, collaboration and credibility. We are your co-pilot, beside you with a map guiding you while you remain in control.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about building sustainable habits that support your health long-term — healthfully and soulfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

All Dietitians are Nutritionists (but not all Nutritionists are Dietitians).

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are the only regulated and licensed health professionals in the field of nutrition in Canada, we are held to ethical standards of practice.  In some provinces including where we are located in Alberta, the word Nutritionist is also a protected title.  To be sure you are accessing advice from the most qualified nutrition professional, look for the initials RD or PDt (DtP in French) after a health professional’s name.

Seeing a Registered Dietitian is one way you can be assured the nutrition education you are receiving is credible.  You wouldn’t ask a celebrity interested in home construction how to wire your basement, you’d ask an electrician. You wouldn’t ask your child’s soccer coach who has an interest in health to provide you with medical treatment.  Apply this same thinking when it comes to nutrition advice.

Just like electricians, engineers and medical doctors, Dietitians are accountable to provincial regulatory bodies for the highest standards of education and ethical practice. Provincial regulatory bodies protect the public and serve as a point of contact for consumer complaints and malpractice.

Titles such as Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Nutritional Practitioner, RONP, RNCP, ROHP, RHN, CNP are not the same as a Registered Dietitian and do not indicate the person is a provincially regulated health professional. These are often used by those who have completed much less intensive privately owned training programs that vary in length and rigor.

To ensure your nutrition care provider is a Dietitian, look for RD or PDt (DtP in French) behind their name. Dietitian is a protected title across Canada, just like physician, nurse and pharmacist.  Nutritionist is also a protected title in Alberta, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

Do I need a doctor's referral to see a Registered Dietitian in Canada?

A doctor’s referral is not required to book an appointment with a Registered Dietitian in Canada. If you have complex medical issues it is ideal to have your doctor provide us with a referral note to update us on your medical situation so we can best take care of your needs. With your permission (signed) we can collaborate with your doctor, psychologist, coach or other health professional to ensure we are all working well as a team.

Is nutrition counselling covered by insurance in Canada?

Many private medical insurance plans and health spending accounts cover nutrition counselling by a Registered Nutritionist/Dietitian. Check your plan to see what is covered for you. Since every insurance company has different policies, please be sure to check with them regarding coverage per session, per year and per family member.

In private insurance and health benefits plans, dietitians are typically listed under the paramedical section. They might have a separate category for nutrition services or registered dietitian services.

If dietitian services aren’t covered under standard benefits, clients can often use a health spending account to get reimbursed.

[In the province of Alberta where we are located as well as many other provinces in Canada, Dietitians are classified as an “Authorized Medical Practitioner” as shown on the Canada Revenue Agency website. What this means is that you can save your receipts and supply them to your accountant for medical expense tax credit.]

We do not direct bill to insurance companies, but upon request after your session, we will provide you with a detailed receipt that includes our Registered Dietitian practice permit number, description of service, dates of counselling sessions and consulting fee breakdown per hour.

Thousands of our clients successfully get reimbursed this way.

How much does it cost to see a Dietitian in Canada?

The cost of seeing a Registered Dietitian in Canada varies depending on the level of support and the services included.

Everyone’s health journey is unique, so rather than offering one-size-fits-all pricing, we provide individualized, transparent pricing based on your goals, health history and the depth of support you need.

Detailed pricing is shared during your free discovery call, where we’ll walk you through your options and help you choose the best package for your needs and insurance coverage.

While we do not offer direct billing, many extended health benefit plans cover nutrition counselling with a registered dietitian in Canada. We provide detailed receipts so you can easily submit for reimbursement.

For clients seeking longer-term support, we also offer savings on bundled programs.

What can a Registered Dietitian help with?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) can help with far more than meal plans.

As regulated health professionals in Canada, Registered Dietitians are trained to provide evidence-based nutrition care for a wide range of health concerns — from medical conditions to performance goals to improving your relationship with food.

Our team commonly supports clients with:

  • Weight concerns & emotional eating, including binge eating, chronic dieting, yo-yo weight changes, and healthy weight gain

  • Digestive health issues, such as IBS, IBD, celiac disease, acid reflux, bloating, constipation, and food intolerances

  • Eating disorders & recovery, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, orthorexia, and disordered eating patterns

  • Women’s health & hormones, including PCOS, fertility, pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, endometriosis, and postpartum nutrition

  • Chronic medical conditions, such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart health concerns

  • Mental health & nutrition, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, and appetite-related challenges

  • Intuitive eating & body image support, helping you reconnect with hunger cues and reduce food guilt

  • Practical meal planning & healthy eating habits for busy professionals, parents, and families

  • Pediatric & family nutrition, including picky eating, neurodiverse eaters, and growth concerns

  • Sports nutrition & performance fueling for athletes and active individuals

  • Vegetarian & plant-based nutrition, ensuring balanced meals and optimal nutrient intake

Registered Dietitians are uniquely qualified to assess medical history, interpret lab values, and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers when needed.

Whether you’re navigating a specific diagnosis or simply want more clarity and confidence around food, working one-on-one with a Registered Dietitian gives you structured, personalized support grounded in science — without rigid rules or fad diets.

No matter your starting point, we help you move toward a way of eating that supports both your health and your real life.

Do you offer virtual nutrition counselling?

Yes! We use a paid version of Zoom known as Zoom Healthcare for telehealth videoconferencing. It’s stable, private and a highly secure HIPAA and PIPEDA/PHIPA compliant type of technology used by hospitals and healthcare workers.

For new clients who are nervous about technology, be assured that as experienced Registered Dietitians, we’ve got you covered.

We can hand-hold the process of how to use Zoom conferencing for online nutrition counseling seamlessly. Virtual dietitian sessions are designed to be simple and accessible. You can join from a computer, tablet, or smartphone with just a few clicks. Our team provides step-by-step instructions before your first session and is happy to troubleshoot any technical issues. Even if you’re not comfortable with technology, we’ll guide you so you can focus on getting personalized nutrition support.
