Our Nutrition Roadmap: What to Expect

When working with a Registered Dietitian, having a clear plan matters. It helps us understand where you’re starting and how to move forward with realistic, sustainable changes that support your health.

To give you the big picture, we break down your nutrition journey into 3 phases, with steps build in along the way. Since one of our core values is customization, we tailor the entire process to your unique needs, spending more time where it matters most for you.

 Our 3-Phased Approach to Nutrition

PHASE 1:

Structure

Goal:

Set the stage by building a framework that supports long-term eating habits and nutrition success

Topics we address may include:

  • The timing & consistency of

    eating

  • Understanding the science

behind why we eat what we eat

  • Learning how to balance meals

    to meet your individual needs

  • Guidance on how much to eat

and how to build out a meal plan

  • In this phase, eating may feel

more “planned” as we are setting

    the foundation of fuelling our

    body well so that eventually

we will be able to rely more on

    hunger/fullness cues to guide

    eating decisions

Phase 2:

FLEXIBILITY

Goal:

Build your confidence in different

eating environments and social

situations, while keeping in mind

the foundation you’ve built.

Areas to explore may include:

  • Expanding your food variety and

options at home. We will help you

build out a repertoire of recipes

    that work within your goals

  • Navigating social settings, festive

    traditions related to food, trying

new foods, and eating on the go.

  • Additional topics that may be

    explored include: Emotional

    Eating, Sports Nutrition, Digestive

    Symptom Management, Eating

    with Medical Concerns

  • We will also start to do some work

on listening for hunger or fullness

cues within the safety net of your

    eating plan from phase 1

Phase 3:

FREEDOM & SPONTANEITY

 Goal:

Personalize the eating experience

and continue to build a toolkit for

long-term success.

This usually includes:

  • Identifying vulnerable situations

where there may be urges to fall

    back on old behaviors

  • Practicing new skills in

    challenging environments and

    building confidence in navigating

    new challenges

  • Incorporating principles of

    mindfulness and/or Intuitive

    Eating, as appropriate

  • Your team is still here for support,

as your life, health, goals, and personal experiences change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Health Stand Nutrition’s Registered Dietitians provide personalized, evidence-based nutrition support for individuals managing medical conditions and chronic health concerns, with care designed to fit real life and support long-term wellbeing.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to see a Registered Dietitian for a medical concern?

No, a doctor’s referral is not required to book an appointment with a Registered Dietitian for medical nutrition support. If you have complex medical issues it is ideal to have your doctor provide us with a referral note to update us on your medical situation so we can best take care of your needs. With your permission (signed) we can collaborate with your doctor, psychologist, coach or other health professional to ensure we are all working well as a team.

Is nutrition counseling covered by my insurance or health benefits?

Many private medical insurance plans and health spending accounts cover medical nutrition support by a Registered Nutritionist/Dietitian. Check your plan in advance to see what is covered for you. Since every insurance company has different policies, please be sure to check with them regarding coverage per session, per year and per family member.

In private insurance and health benefits plans, dietitians are typically listed under the paramedical section. They might have a separate category for nutrition services or registered dietitian services.

If dietitian services aren’t covered under standard benefits, clients can often use a health spending account to get reimbursed.

We do not direct bill to insurance companies, but upon request after your session, we will provide you with a detailed receipt that includes our Registered Dietitian practice permit number, description of service, dates of counselling sessions and consulting fee breakdown per hour.

Thousands of our clients successfully get reimbursed this way.

Also note, in many provinces in Canada, Dietitians are classified as an “Authorized Medical Practitioner” as shown on the Canada Revenue Agency website. What this means is that you can save your receipts and supply them to your accountant for medical expense tax credit.

Can you work with my doctor or healthcare team?

Yes. With your signed consent, our Registered Dietitians are happy to collaborate with your physician or other members of your healthcare team. This allows us to align your nutrition plan with your medical care, lab results, medications, and treatment goals, ensuring consistent and coordinated support.

We view nutrition as one part of your overall healthcare picture and work respectfully within your care team to help support your health in a safe, evidence-based way.

What if I have multiple medical conditions?

That’s very common, and you’re not alone. Many of our clients manage more than one health concern, and our Dietitians take the time to understand the full picture – including your medical history, medications, symptoms, and day-to-day life.

Depending on your needs, your care may involve one primary Registered Dietitian supported by our collaborative team, or—when multiple areas of expertise are helpful—you may work with more than one Dietitian. In all cases, we coordinate care thoughtfully so expertise is shared, plans are aligned, and your nutrition support feels seamless, well-organized, and tailored to your health needs.

Our goal is always to provide personalized, flexible nutrition guidance that supports your overall health and helps you feel confident and supported every step of the way.

What’s the difference between working with a dietitian versus searching online for nutrition resources?

Online advice can be overwhelming and often one-size-fits-all. A dietitian gives you personalized guidance, helping you understand your symptoms, find the right strategies for your body, and feel confident in your food choices.

Unlike AI tools, Registered Dietitians can assess your full medical history, spot red flags, tailor plans to your lifestyle, and adjust your nutrition strategy as your body responds. You get expert interpretation, not just information, plus the personal/compassionate support and accountability that only a real human can provide.

How many appointments will I need for medical nutrition care?

The number of appointments really depends on your individual needs, goals, and medical situation. Some people feel supported after just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing follow-ups to help manage more complex or long-term health concerns.

Booking a free discovery call is a great first step. It gives us a chance to learn more about what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and help recommend an approach that feels appropriate and supportive for you, including a general sense of how many sessions may be helpful.

We’ll always work at a pace that feels manageable and aligned with your goals.

How much does it cost to see a specialized Registered Dietitian for my medical concern?

The cost to see a specialized Registered Dietitian for medical concerns and chronic conditions varies.

Everyone’s health journey is unique, and so is the level of support they need. Instead of one-size-fits-all quotes, we offer individualized, transparent pricing based on the depth of support and services included.

Individualized pricing, along with guidance on choosing the right package for your insurance plan, is shared during your free discovery call. We’ll also share with you the additional savings we offer if you require longer-term support.

Is virtual nutrition counseling available?

Yes, our specialist dietitians can see you from the comfort of your home. We use  Zoom Healthcare for telehealth videoconferencing. It’s stable, private and a highly secure HIPAA and PIPEDA/PHIPA compliant type of technology used by hospitals and healthcare workers.

Even if you are inexperienced with computer technology you will be surprised how easy it is to use. All you need is a web camera on your computer. At the beginning of your appointment, all you will need to do is click on the website link we’ve provided you with to access our private Zoom room. Then at the start of your appointment your nutrition educator will permit access to begin the videoconference. We can provide you with a demo to show you how easy it is to use. You’ll love that you can see us on video and that we can share notes resources just like you were in our office.

Important: All our nutrition educators are registered with the College of Registered Dietitians of Alberta. This means they carry a license to work as a Registered Dietitian in the province of Alberta. With this license we are permitted to provide virtual dietetic practice as a Registered Dietitian in all provinces throughout Canada except BC, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador and PEI where an additional specific license is also required. To help accommodate this requirement some of our Registered Dietitian team members also have registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario, Saskatchewan Dietitians Association and the College of Dietitians of British Columbia.

IF YOU ARE FROM QUEBEC, PEI, NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR, MANITOBA OR OUTSIDE CANADA READ BELOW CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU SIGN UP FOR OUR SERVICES:

For the following provinces in Canada (Quebec, PEI, Newfoundland & Labrador, and Manitoba) as well as other global territories while we can’t see you as a Registered Dietitian, we can still work with you to provide nutrition education services that would not be considered medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and that would be provided for information purposes only. Please note that insurance providers may have different policies/criteria for reimbursement if the service is provided through virtual practice or by a nutritional specialist who is not licensed and registered to practice as a Dietitian or Nutritionist in the jurisdiction where you reside. Be sure to confirm your insurance coverage requirements prior to booking services with us.
