Get to know Gurveen as she shares what she loves most about being a dietitian, the nutrition myths she’d like to challenge, and a few of her favourite foods and personal interests!
What is your background as a Registered Dietitian?
I’ve spent my career working across a wide range of clinical settings, about eight different environments in total, and each one has shaped how I approach nutrition today. I started out in acute care in hospitals, where I learned how to support patients through some of their most complex medical needs. From there, I moved into rehabilitation and geriatrics, working closely with older adults to help them maintain their strength, independence, and quality of life as they age.
I’ve also worked as a home care dietitian in the community, and in private practice alongside psychologists, which gave me a deeper appreciation for how closely nutrition, mental health, and emotional well-being are connected. Across all of these settings, I’ve had the opportunity to work with people facing a huge variety of health concerns and life circumstances. That range of experience is something I really value, because it means I don’t approach nutrition with a one-size-fits-all mindset. Instead, I bring a broad, adaptable toolkit to every client I work with.

What is your favourite part of being a Dietitian?
Without a doubt, it’s connecting with clients. I love getting to know someone’s story: their habits, their routines, the challenges they’re navigating, and what daily life actually looks like for them. Nutrition isn’t just about food; it’s tied to someone’s schedule, their culture, their relationships, and their history.
Once I understand that bigger picture, I get to work with clients to find realistic, creative ways to bring good nutrition into their everyday lives in a way that actually fits who they are. There’s a lot of problem-solving involved, and I find that process genuinely rewarding, especially when a client realizes that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated or restrictive to work for them.

What is one myth that you want to clear up about Dietitians?
A common misconception is that dietitians are the “food police,” here to hand out lists of foods to eat and avoid, and to judge people’s choices along the way. In reality, the job is far more layered than that.
Being a dietitian means wearing a lot of different hats. Some days I’m looking closely at someone’s daily behaviors and schedule to understand what’s realistic for them. Other days, the work feels almost like therapy, digging into the “why” behind someone’s food choices rather than just the “what.” Food is deeply personal and cultural, shaped by memory, upbringing, and identity, and understanding that side of nutrition is just as important as understanding the science. Dietitians have to hold both of those things at once, which makes this far from a one-dimensional profession.
What is your favourite soulful food chosen for taste, enjoyment, and social fun?
Ice cream, hands down, especially chocolate. There’s something about it that just feels like pure enjoyment. It’s the perfect treat on a hot summer day, and it’s the kind of food that’s made for sharing with people you love.
What is your favourite nerdy nutritious food chosen for health?
Chia seeds. I love that something so small can pack in so much: protein, healthy fats, and fiber, all in one tiny seed. I especially enjoy making chia seed pudding, and I love finding ways to sprinkle them into meals as an easy, nutrient-dense add-on.

What is something that people may not know about you?
I love to travel, and I’m hoping to do a lot more of it, this year and in the years ahead. I recently visited Italy for the first time, and it was honestly one of the best trips of my life. I loved learning about the culture and history along the way, and it’s sparked a real desire in me to keep exploring new countries and cities, and to keep learning something new wherever I go.
