Easy Chocolate Fondue
A great outdoor dessert to share with your friends or family!
By Dietitian, Carlin Frimmel from Camp Kitchen

I’m sure we all have those favourite childhood recipes or meals that give us a warm nostalgic feeling when we remember them. For me, chocolate fondue is one of them. I just loved the fun of dipping different things in the warm, gooey chocolate and trying out all the different dipper combinations. My favourites have to be strawberries, bananas (both classics), pretzels, and fresh coconut chunks (if you haven’t tried this, you gotta!). Really, what’s there not to love about chocolate fondue?
We recruited my parents to be part of the shoot (it didn’t take much convincing haha), because a big part of fondue is the experience of sharing it with others, so thanks, mom and dad!
I made this recipe semi-backpacking friendly. Typically, the base of a chocolate fondue has milk, cream, or oil in it. Since all those things are heavy to carry up a mountain, I chose to use a small amount of hot chocolate as the base and just add in chocolate chips. It worked great! I chose dark chocolate chips, as the hot chocolate powder already has quite a bit of sugar in it and we didn’t want the sauce to turn out too sweet.

For the dippers, you can use the classic, fresh fruit, or opt for a more lightweight version and bring dried fruit. I also love using pretzels or graham crackers or even marshmallows. You really can be so creative when it comes to the dippers!
What You Need:
- 3-4 Tbsp hot chocolate powder
- 1/2 cup (80g) dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Assorted fruit (fresh or dried)
- Additional dippers (pretzels, graham crackers, cookies, marshmallows, etc.)
How to Make It:
- Bring 1/4 cup water to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and stir in the hot chocolate powder.
- Add the chocolate chips and melt together on low heat until smooth. Turn off the heat.
- Prepare your fondue dippers. Slice up any fresh fruit or opt for a lightweight option and enjoy dried fruit instead!
I hope this recipe shows you that it’s really not too difficult to enjoy those nostalgic, delicious treats in the outdoors, just like you would at home! Happy camping, friends!
